Pontiac opts for online to launch new G5 coupe

Pontiac is launching its sporty new G5 coupe exclusively online. AdAge.com reports that the entire ad budget for the introduction of Pontiac's G5 is earmarked for the internet. Pontiac is targeting mostly younger men for the new coupe, and it naturally make sense to use the online medium.

In what is becoming a trend particularly in the big spending auto industry, it looks like the marketing transition from traditional to online could see auto marketers take a huge piece of the US$20 billion that they currently spend to online.

Indeed AdAge.com reports that "Interactive-buying shop Jumpstart Automotive Media, in fact, estimates that within five years auto marketers will get better ad bang for 20% less."

Green machine. Battery powered sports car about to go into production

With the likes of PayPal cofounder Elon Musk, Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and ex-eBay chief Jeff Skoll backing a new auto company, Tesla Motors, we're about to start hearing some noise about the world's first battery powered sportcar which is heading for production and may well be hitting the market next year.

Though, as Wired reports, it's not the engine that's going to be roaring.

"The Tesla Roadster is powered by 6,831 rechargeable lithium-ion batteries - the same cells that run a laptop computer. Range: 250 miles. Fuel efficiency: 1 to 2 cents per mile. Top speed: more than 130 mph."

And in true silicon valley style, if you want to be one of the first to purchase the new car - the most convenient way will from the Tesla Motors website in late 2006.

But if you're not in the market for a high performance sports car but like the sound of a performance electric vehicle, the company plans to develop a less expensive sports sedan in the near future.

New car website touted as a new discovery

It seems that Volkswagen in the UK has been winning a bit of kudos for its new Eos website for potential buyers - allowing them to experience the new car in an innovative way, as well as inviting them to customise and select their own vehicle ahead of its on-sale date of 14 July.

Whilst the site is touted as using the latest online interactive technology, and whilst it does look pretty, the site does not offer what are fast becoming essential functionality components on car sites like inventory searches and vehicle comparisons.
