The case for mobile web applications

By Simon van Wyk

In my last couple of blog posts I have thrown around a few statistics that demonstrate the explosive growth of the mobile web and smartphone penetration in Australia.

Now I am a proud Apple user and rely on several devices powered by iOS in my professional and personal life. I’m not alone – iPhones make up 45% of smartphones sold in Australia, one of the highest market shares in the world.

But the mobile world is changing rapidly, even more rapidly than other market sectors. Despite the continuing success of Apple, you cannot discount the presence of its competitors, most notably Google.

In the US, for example, Android phones (powered by Google) now have a 40% market share, almost 15% ahead of the iPhone, according to the most recent Comscore report. Meanwhile, according to Canalys, Android’s global mobile phone market share is 48%, compared to only 19% for the iPhone.

Measuring the success of mobile healthcare activities

By tids

By Simon van Wyk

It’s the question on every marketer’s (and CEO’s) lips: How do I know if my marketing efforts are working? When it comes to digital healthcare activities, there are a number of options available, but as with so many digital areas, there is no easy answer as to how to measure marketing success.

Looking specifically at mobile marketing activities, you need to balance the numbers. On the plus side, the explosive growth in smartphone and tablet use, particularly among healthcare professionals, opens up a wide audience. On the other hand, you need to consider that there are currently about 8,000 health-related apps in iTunes and hundreds (soon to be thousands) available for Android.

The only certainties in life are death and taxes, and avoiding death by seeking health information online has proved a lot more popular than using Internet info to avoid taxes, as Simon van Wyk writes.

Despite all the developments in open source technology and delivery, it’s a big step for a business to leave the familiarity of enterprise solutions and embrace the brave new world of open source.

It’s worth doing your homework so you understand what you’re getting yourself into. Not surprisingly, as an IT-driven movement, there are a lot of places on the web devoted to all things open source. Below are some interesting links if you want to know more.

alfresco

I interviewed Alfresco Software’s regional sales manager, Barry Costin, on the topic of open source vs. enterprise software for this month’s HotHouse podcast.

Why tackle such a seemingly technical topic for a marketing blog (albeit a marketing and technology blog)? Why should we care about the intricacies of software? Well first, let’s start with some background for marketing-softened brains. Here’s a definition of open source software from How Stuff Works:

“Most software that you buy or download only comes in the compiled ready-to-run version…. It is extremely difficult to modify the compiled version of most applications and nearly impossible to see exactly how the developer created different parts of the program. Most commercial software manufacturers see this as an advantage that keeps other companies from copying their code and using it in a competing product. It also gives them control over the quality and features found in a particular product. read more

Enterprise anything

I’m quite sure Google rewrote the book on best practice. I remember our technical director arguing with an enterprise architect about how eBay had scaled their platform. The architect had one opinion, eBay had another. The issue was simple – in a very short space of time eBay had rewritten best practice.
