Nielsen has released a new report into Social Network’s New Global Footprint.
The report highlights the following:
- Two-thirds of the world’s internet population visit social networking or blogging sites
- In Australia this accounts for 10.9% of all time spent on the internet
- Time spent on social network and blogging sites growing at more than 3x the rate of overall internet growth
- Social network and blogging sites are the fourth most popular activity on the internet, and more popular than Email
- Facebook has become the world’s most popular social network with a global 108M unique audience (although Twitter is fastest growing)
- MySpace remains most poular for music related content and conversations
- Whilst social networks started out with a younger audience, they are becoming more mainstream
- There’s increasing demand to access social networks via mobile devices

John Burbank, CEO of Nielsen Online comments: “Social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience…..While two-thirds of the global online population already accesses member community sites, their vigorous adoption and the migration of time show no signs of slowing.”
