The Challenge

HotHouse was approached by Amaysim’s founders to develop a solution delivering its Australian consumer website. As a low cost telecommunications provider, Amaysim had done extremely well in the European markets, and as such, was one of the biggest startups to launch in Australia in 2010. HotHouse won a competitive pitch for the work, due, in part, to our full service approach and our understanding of their business.

The brief was to create an approachable, easy to use consumer site employing carrier grade PCI compliant ecommerce functionality. The priorities for the site were a highly accessible user experience, fast loading times and a robust environment to accommodate high traffic volumes. Being an ecommerce site, naturally it also required a high proportion of customer conversions.

The HotHouse solution

HotHouse recognised that a well-planned online strategy would be critical to the success of Amaysim. As such, we offered business consulting services and contributed significantly towards figuring out exactly how the various business systems would work.

HotHouse worked closely with the founders and other partners to create an online solution that would seamlessly integrate the retail component, the call centre and the customer self-service facility. This integration was integral to maintaining their low-cost model. We delivered a distinctive, easy to use website based on the Ruby-on-Rails framework. The site was optimised for SEO and fully integrated with the mobile billing and customer services systems.

The sophisticated back-end development allows users to purchase an Amaysim SIM card, port over an existing mobile number, establish their payment method and securely access their account’s management. HotHouse integrated an easy to use CMS to support the Amaysim team quickly making changes and updates to site content. In just under four months, successfully delivering this extensive scope, HotHouse deployed the site for the launch of the business.

The Result

The site converted an unprecedented number of customers, and continues to represent the primary sales channel for the business. The robustness of this platform was put to the test when Amaysim was heavily featured in prime time national media coverage. During these promotions, visits to the site spiked dramatically over sustained periods. The Amaysim site withstood these demands, and continues to function effectively supporting the business and its customers.

The site has received numerous accolades for its usability – borne out by the number of customers who use the website’s self service facilities. HotHouse continues to work with Amaysim to provide strategic insights, site optimization and new functionality. We’re very proud of this outcome for everyone involved.
